Simon Buck Photography bio picture
  • Welcome to my blog!

This is the place to check out all the latest news and images from Simon Buck Photography. Regular updates will include samples of the photos from recent commissions, business news and any general points of interest relevant to my work.

My old website used to feature a wide range of work from weddings to PR to commercial to surfing to travel. Having now split my business and launched a new website focused primarily on social photography the blog will also give me a chance to exhibit this variety of work once again. Of course weddings and portraiture will play a large part but when I have some particularly juicy surf photos, cool landscapes or interesting PR & editorial shots I'll be putting them up on here as well.

I love to hear your opinions so please feel free to add your comments to the relevant posts. Keep checking back when you can or subscribe for automatic updates straight to your email.

    Thanks and enjoy,

    Simon

Catherine & John’s Wedding – St Mary’s, Heacham and Voewood, Holt 7th August 2010

It’s funny how things work out. When I first started to consider photography as a serious option as a career I had been getting into shooting bands at local venues. I’m a big fan of music, so this was always a lot of fun and I got to meet several very cool, very interesting people along the way. Now that I’m working at this photography thing full time, 24/7, I’ve had to concentrate on the side of my business that gives me a realistic income – the wedding, portrait and PR side of things. Mrs Buck would not be happy if I didn’t and who could blame her?! Because of this the band, surf and wildlife photography has really taken a back seat for a while which is a shame.*

When Catherine first contacted me to enquire about her wedding we spent a long time on the phone chatting through everything. It was one of those calls where you click with the person pretty quickly and I had a good feeling about it. From what I could gather they were a fun sounding couple and the reception venue was to be one of my favourites – Voewood near Holt. As per my usual line of questioning I asked what her fiance did for a living to be told John was a musician in a band. As it turned out this happens to be the legendary rockgrass band Hayseed Dixie!

It was a day of logistics and finger-crossing with an inclement forecast and two long journeys between Catherine’s parent’s house, the church and then the reception. This was however nowhere near the distance travelled by John’s family and friends who came all the way from his native Tennessee. Despite the downpours (what IS going on this summer?!) we managed to make the most of the breaks in the rain to get a few nice couple-shots and the crucial groups. My highlight of the night was getting to shoot Catherine and John’s first song including John’s warm-up with the evening’s band Schwing. They chose to perform a duet in place of a dance providing the perfect crescendo to a very cool, very interesting and very fun day indeed!

RNLI Norfolk Lifeguard shoot on location, Sea Palling 09.08.10

On Monday evening I headed to the beach at Sea Palling to shoot some pr images for Norfolk’s RNLI team. The attending team of 40+ lifeguards, supervisors and lifeboat crew were there in full regalia along with the supporting vehicles and marine craft used in their day-to-day work. After the strenuously co-ordinated group shot and with the light fading I got the chance to shoot the lifeboats in action and even grabbed a couple of the beach lifeguard guys for an impromptu portrait. Thanks to Stu and the team for actually making it go pretty smoothly! All images can be viewed in the Client Proofing section on the main website.

Catherine & Ashley’s wedding at All Saints, Wreningham and Blo Norton Hall, Norfolk 31st July 2010

This summer’s been a bit up-and-down with regard to the weather and a couple of Saturdays ago was no exception. Drizzle, downpours, bright haze and a few rumbles of thunder here and there kept us guessing for the day of Catherine and Ashley’s wedding. Luckily the rain stopped when it needed to, for both Catherine’s arrival at the church and the duration of the afternoon reception at the the magical Blo Norton Hall. We made the most of the unspoiled grounds which seemed to be a haven for all kinds of wildlife including a resident flycatcher nesting in the walls. This is the first large scale wedding to be held at this impressive Elizabethan manor just southwest of Diss and proved the perfect setting for this classic English, countryside wedding.

Kevin & David’s Civil Partnership at Satis House, Suffolk 26th July 2010

Kevin and David are an absolutely charming couple and their civil partnership is the first I’ve covered. This presented me with a chance to go about things differently so it was a really fun challenge. Usually I’ll kick off a wedding day’s coverage with the hubbub of the bridal preparations but obviously this wasn’t going to be a factor on this occasion. Kevin and David wanted a fairly low-key wind-up to the day, away from their descending guests, alone in their suite to get ready in peace. I was given a few moments before proceedings began to capture some last minute intimate portraits before heading down to take my place amongst the guests ready for the ceremony. A few, simple but emotional declarations and three wonderful readings by friends later and it was on to the celebrations. The flowers by Foxtaillily and decor, food and drink were all fantastic, unsurprisingly given Satis House reputation, with musical entertainment provided by Music and  Events. With everything just right it wasn’t hard to see why everybody was having a good time! David has been performing on stage in the West End in the Lion King for the last 10 years and several of the cast were guests. Despite my initial predictions nobody had started a “Circle of Life” medley before I left. I’m sure that later in the evening it was a different story!

Samantha & Jordan’s Pre-wedding Session, Bramerton, Norfolk

This is part one of a two part pre-wedding session for Sam and Jordan whose wedding I’ll be covering in France later this August. We’ll be having a second warm-up shoot along with the recce the day before their ceremony at Chateau des Berne just west of Saint Raphael. It’s going to be great to shoot at such a different location and I’m really looking forward to it.
